Wastewater treatment is the process that removes the majority of the contaminants from wastewater or sewage and produces a liquid effluent suitable for disposal in the natural environment. There are two main polluted sources needed for treatment: municipal wastewater and industrial liquid waste. The main goal of wastewater treatment is to minimize the burden on the receiving watercourses by removing all organic and oxygen-consuming compounds and nutrients. Once treated, wastewater can be released back into the water system or recycled for use.
