PE shrink film is widely used to package products, packaging, or protect large-value orders during transportation. Although PE shrink films are quite thin, they are waterproof and have sustainable elasticity over time. In this article, TLD Vietnam will introduce in detail the definition, characteristics, and applications of PE shrink film. Check it out now!
Definition of PE shrink film

PE plastic particles (Polyethylene or Polyethene) are the main component of PE shrink film. They are classified as thermoplastics and have the chemical formula CH2-CH2. Basically, the PE shrink film production process will go through 4 stages, specifically as follows:
Step 1: Check and prepare PE plastic granules. We consider mixing them with plastic additives suitable for each industry.
Step 2: The above mixture is melted at a temperature of 200 – 275 degrees Celsius in an extruder. To optimize the quality of PE shrink film, the manufacturer will filter the mixture through a metal mesh to completely remove impurities or residue that does not melt.
Step 3: The plastic mixture is shaped into a tube through a rim-shaped mold. Next, they will be inflated through small holes in the mold.
Step 4: PE shrink film is rolled flat according to standards after going through a high-speed cooling process with air for about 15 – 20 minutes.
Compared with POF shrink film and PVC shrink film, PE shrink film is more durable and stronger. Because the thickness of PE shrink film can reach 1200, while the maximum thickness of POF and PVC is only about 100 gauge. Therefore, PE shrink film is widely used in industry, freight transport, and packaging.
Not only impressive in terms of thickness, PE shrink film also possesses 7 other optimal characteristics. Let’s find out more details in the next section with TLD Vietnam!
Characteristics of PE shrink film

PE shrink film is widely used in many fields because it has the following 7 optimal characteristics:
Key Characteristics
Elasticity
With an elasticity range of 50–75%, this shrink film adapts to various item sizes, ensuring robust protection and structural stability over time. Combined with its thickness, this elasticity enhances durability.
Waterproof and Scratch Resistance
A thin adhesive coating applied post-production boosts hardness and resistance to surface scratches. Multiple layers of this coating, along with the film’s thickness, maximize surface durability. Additionally, it offers excellent waterproofing, blocking up to 90% of moisture penetration even after 24 hours of water exposure, safeguarding products from weather-related damage.
Dustproof and Antibacterial
The robust structure and coating create a barrier against dust and bacteria, making it ideal for food packaging. Free of harmful additives or chemicals, it prioritizes consumer safety. However, improper storage—such as prolonged exposure to sunlight or high humidity—may lead to deformation, potentially affecting food safety.
Cost-Effectiveness
This shrink film is 20–25% more affordable than PVC film due to the natural flexibility of PE resin, eliminating the need for plastic additives. This reduces processing costs by 15–20% while ensuring consumer safety, making it suitable for food industry applications. In contrast, PVC film often incorporates additives like FEHA or DEHP, which are harder to quality-control and may alter during processing.
Insulation Capacity
Despite a melting point of 105–135°C, the film can be enhanced with benign additives to improve heat resistance. It also performs well at temperatures as low as -50°C, supporting product preservation in both hot and freezing conditions, which is critical for global supply chain logistics.
High Durability
The film withstands impact, tensile forces, and tearing effectively. For instance, shrink film made from HDPE resin offers a tear resistance of approximately 50N and can endure impacts up to 10kg, surpassing the durability of carton boxes or PVC film.
Applications of PE Shrink Film
The following five applications highlight its versatility in industry and daily life:
Product Packaging
For heavy goods, especially exports, the shrink film is wrapped multiple times around products or cartons to prevent impact damage, water exposure, and dust accumulation, ensuring quality during transportation.
Agricultural Sector
In agriculture, it serves as a protective layer for greenhouses and nurseries, shielding against pests, temperature fluctuations, and humidity. It also covers poultry barns to maintain hygiene and prevent pathogen spread.
Food Preservation
Commonly used to wrap leftover food, fruits, or other perishables, the shrink film extends storage life while maintaining hygiene and safety.
Miscellaneous Uses
The film is employed in producing raincoats, car covers, and protective wraps for furniture during relocation. Its high transparency makes it popular in furniture showrooms, allowing customers to view products while ensuring long-term preservation. Additionally, it serves as packaging for books in the education sector.
Comparison Between PE Shrink Film and Standard PE Film
Understanding the distinctions between PE shrink film and standard PE film is crucial for selecting the right packaging material.
PE Shrink Film
This film shrinks tightly around products when heated, conforming to their shape. It is ideal for bundling items like bottled water, food products, or securing palletized goods using heat guns or shrink tunnels. Its production requires precise control over shrink ratios (20–80%) in both machine and transverse directions.
Standard PE Film
Unlike its shrinkable counterpart, standard PE film does not contract when heated. It is used for wrapping, covering, and protecting products against dust, moisture, and scratches, prioritizing flexibility, tensile strength, and durability.
Conclusion
PE shrink film is a cornerstone of the packaging industry, offering durability, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness. With advancements in sustainability and growing market demand, it remains a vital solution for modern packaging needs.
