Polystyrene (PS)
Polystyrene (PS) is a predominantly amorphous thermoplastic polymer produced through the polymerization of styrene monomer (C₆H₅–CH=CH₂), forming a saturated carbon-carbon backbone with pendant phenyl groups. Conventional commercial PS possesses an atactic molecular configuration, in which the irregular arrangement of phenyl groups restricts crystallization and contributes to optical transparency, high rigidity, and dimensional stability. The bulky aromatic side groups restrict segmental chain mobility, resulting in a glass transition temperature typically ranging from 95-105°C, while the absence of crystalline reinforcement contributes to inherent brittleness and limited impact toughness.
Commercial PS resins are primarily classified into General purpose polystyrene (GPPS), a transparent, rigid homopolymer, and High impact polystyrene (HIPS), a multiphase rubber-modified material containing dispersed polybutadiene-rich domains. These elastomeric domains promote localized plastic deformation and energy dissipation under mechanical loading, improving fracture toughness while generally reducing optical transparency. Material performance and processing characteristics depend on molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, rubber content, particle morphology, and polymer formulation.
Electrical Insulation
PS provides electrical insulation through its low polarity, high volume resistivity, and minimal dielectric losses. Its predominantly nonpolar molecular structure limits electrical conduction, while dielectric performance depends on operating frequency, temperature, moisture content, and the presence of conductive impurities.
Chemical Resistance
PS resists many dilute aqueous acids, alkalis, and inorganic salt solutions due to its chemically stable hydrocarbon backbone. However, aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, and certain chlorinated solvents can induce swelling, environmental stress cracking, or dissolution, particularly under sustained mechanical stress.
Optical Clarity & Surface Gloss
GPPS achieves high optical clarity through its amorphous molecular structure, which minimizes crystalline light scattering. Surface gloss depends on mold finish and processing conditions, while dispersed rubber particles in high impact polystyrene generally increase haze and reduce transparency.
Moisture Resistance & Dimensional Stability
PS has low moisture absorption because its hydrophobic molecular structure contains few sites for water interaction. This limits moisture related dimensional changes, although thermal expansion, residual molding stresses, and prolonged exposure near its glass transition temperature can compromise dimensional accuracy.
