Calcium Carbonate
Calcium Carbonate (CaCO₃) is an inorganic mineral compound available in different grades, including Ground Calcium Carbonate (GCC), Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (PCC), and Nano Calcium Carbonate. These materials differ in their production methods, particle size, crystalline morphology, and physical characteristics, resulting in distinct technical properties.
GCC is obtained through the mechanical crushing, grinding, micronization, and classification of natural limestone, marble, or chalk deposits. PCC, in contrast, is manufactured through controlled chemical precipitation, allowing greater control over particle size, crystalline structure, and morphology. Nano Calcium Carbonate is characterized by nanoscale particle dimensions and a high specific surface area, with its properties depending on particle structure and production conditions. The physical and chemical properties of Calcium Carbonate vary according to product grade, including calcium carbonate content, whiteness, brightness, particle size distribution, specific surface area, oil absorption, moisture content, and impurity levels. These parameters are influenced by raw material quality, manufacturing technology, particle classification, and processing conditions. Depending on the required technical specifications, Calcium Carbonate is available in coated and uncoated grades. Surface treatment using Stearic acid or other modifying agents can alter particle surface characteristics, particularly hydrophobicity and interfacial properties, providing different surface characteristics across product grades.
High Whiteness and Brightness
Calcium Carbonate is characterized by its high whiteness and brightness, primarily determined by mineral purity, crystalline structure, particle size, and the presence of impurities. GCC derived from high-purity limestone and marble generally exhibits excellent optical properties, while PCC and Nano Calcium Carbonate offer different optical characteristics depending on their particle morphology and manufacturing processes.
These properties influence light scattering, opacity, and color uniformity, making whiteness and brightness important quality parameters across different Calcium Carbonate grades.
Good Chemical Stability
Calcium Carbonate exhibits good chemical stability under normal storage and processing conditions. Its predominantly calcite-based mineral structure has low solubility in neutral water and maintains its chemical integrity in non-acidic environments.
As an alkaline-earth carbonate, CaCO₃ reacts with acids to release Carbon dioxide (CO₂). At elevated temperatures, it can undergo thermal decomposition into Calcium oxide (CaO) and CO₂. These fundamental chemical properties apply to GCC, PCC, and Nano Calcium Carbonate, although their physical characteristics may differ.
Superior Filler Efficiency
GCC, PCC, and Nano Calcium Carbonate differ in particle size, morphology, specific surface area, and surface characteristics, resulting in distinct functional properties.
GCC is available in a wide range of particle sizes, with properties controlled through mechanical grinding and classification. PCC offers greater control over crystalline morphology and particle structure through chemical precipitation. Nano Calcium Carbonate features nanoscale particles and high specific surface area, providing enhanced interfacial interactions and reinforcement potential when properly dispersed and surface-treated.
Depending on particle characteristics, surface modification, and formulation conditions, these materials can contribute to stiffness, dimensional stability, impact resistance, and overall material performance.
