Barite
Barite is a naturally occurring Barium sulfate mineral (BaSO₄), formed through precipitation when barium-bearing fluids encounter sulfate ions in hydrothermal or sedimentary environments. Industrial grades are processed through beneficiation and controlled grinding, with mineral purity, density, and particle size distribution determining their suitability as fillers, extenders, and weighting agents.
High Density
Barite’s high mineral density increases compound mass at relatively low filler volume, allowing precise weight adjustment in polymer formulations. Loading calculations should distinguish weight fraction from volume fraction, since equivalent mass additions occupy less volume than conventional lower density fillers.
Chemical Inertness
Barite’s low solubility and limited chemical reactivity reduce unwanted interactions with resins, plasticizers, and other formulation components under normal processing conditions. This mineral stability preserves filler integrity, while finished product resistance still depends on the polymer matrix and additive package.
Low Oil Absorption
Selected Barite grades have low oil absorption, limiting binder demand during wetting and allowing higher filler loading within workable viscosity ranges. Actual processing behavior depends on particle surface area, packing characteristics, surface treatment, and compatibility with the resin or plasticizer.
Controlled Particle Size
Controlled grinding and classification regulate Barite’s particle size distribution, limiting coarse residues that can cause surface defects and uneven dispersion. Median particle size and upper particle size limits guide grade selection for specific film thicknesses, extrusion requirements, and surface finishes.
Low Abrasiveness
Barite’s relatively low mineral hardness can reduce abrasive wear compared with harder fillers, particularly when quartz contamination and coarse residues are controlled. Equipment wear nevertheless depends on mineral purity, particle size, filler concentration, processing speed, and the equipment’s contact materials.
Good Whiteness
Selected Barite grades achieve good whiteness through ore selection and beneficiation that reduce iron compounds and other colored impurities. Consistent mineral color provides a cleaner base for pigmentation, while final appearance depends on dispersion, resin color, and the pigment system.
